DESCRIPTION:SCPS Private Practice Townhall\nTuesday\, March 21st at 7pm via Zoom\nSCPS is excited to present a private practice townhall\, focused on local and state advocacy. This is an opportunity for those in private practice\, outpatient psychiatry\, and any psychiatrist interested in learning how private practice psychiatry is being strengthen to attend and participate. \nSCPS recognizes that there are fundamental problems and special burdens on psychiatrists who have a private practice. Notably\, private practice psychiatrists lack of larger system for support and health systems administrative requirements and other biases that disproportionately burden private practice psychiatry. \nIn order to strengthen your private practice\, SCPS needs your help to identify key challenges. Participants will better understand unjustified impediments from panelists and speakers (i.e.\, regulations\, laws\, and other social and local impediments.) \nWith a coordinated effort\, SCPS will work to forge effective local advocacy for private practice. Fortunately\, there is emerging evidence for a potential behavioral vaccine against loneliness in the form of wisdom. Wisdom is a complex personality trait with specific components including empathy/compassion\, emotional regulation\, and self-reflection. This presentation will address putative neurobiological underpinnings of wisdom. Components of wisdom are potentially modifiable and tend to increase with age and experience. Froehlich\, Ph.D.\, MFT7666\nDirector of Behavioral Health & Lead Clinician\,\nLos Angeles County Fire Fighters Local 1014 \nDr. Steve Froehlich will lead a presentation and panel discussion with Peer Support personnel (firefighters who have been trained to provide Peer Support). \nThis session is designed for clinicians interested in becoming culturally competent with the special needs of firefighters and their families. The fire service is a unique culture based on a paramilitary structure. From mass casualty incidents to the pain of a child dying in their arms\, firefighters face horrors that few outside the profession can imagine\, which can take its toll on even the strongest individuals. National surveys suggest nearly one in three firefighters has considered suicide and face struggles with intimate relationships. An overview of modern clinical research findings with MDMA and psilocybin will help to clarify emerging perspectives with broad potential implications for the future of psychiatry. The role of recent developments in public opinion conjoined with an evolving legal landscape in regard to hallucinogens will be addressed as they impact current research endeavors. The presentation will conclude with all important attention to optimizing safety and ethical parameters for clinical research with hallucinogenic drugs. The presentation will close with a Q and A with the audience. \n10:40am – 12:15pm\nPsilocybin Therapy in Palliative Care\nBrian Anderson\, MD\, MSc\nZuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital; UCSF Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences \nThe field of psilocybin research has expanded rapidly over the last 5 years with new clinical trials for a variety of indications being initiated on a regular basis. There is also a growing interest in regulatory alternatives that are making Psilocybin mushrooms and other psychedelics more readily available in the US. Given this growing interest in these substances\, there is an ever more urgent need for robust and reliable information on the safety and potential efficacy of psilocybin. Over the last several decades\, treating existential distress in patients with serious medical illness has consistently been a leading indication for psychedelic therapies. This talk will explore 20th and 21st Century data on the use of psilocybin for mood\, anxiety\, and existential distress in clinical populations\, with a focus on palliative care patients. This program will present three perspectives of this inspiring work. Our three presenters will each speak for 10 minutes describing the fascinating disaster relief mental health work that they have each done.  At the end of the three presentations\, they will answer audience questions. \nLeslie Gise\, M.D. will talk about what she learned from going to Katrina in 2005\, deploying to the Big Island of Hawaii in 2018\, serving as Mental Health Lead for the Maui Red Cross\, and serving as a member of the MRC Medical Reserve Corps (Maui County Health Volunteers). Dr. Gise is an active member on the APA’s Committee on Psychiatric Dimensions of Disaster and was formerly in DMAT Disaster Medical Assistance Team and VOAD Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster. \nRandy Mervis\, M.D. is a geriatric psychiatrist who retired from the Greater Los Angeles Veterans Affairs System after 30 years of service in 2018.  He had been a volunteer for the Los Angeles Chapter of the American Red Cross for over 25 years.  He has served this organization as a mental health worker for multiple traumatic events\, including fires\, floods\, train and plane crashes. \nMary Ann Schaepper\, M.D. is a board-certified child\, adolescent\, and adult psychiatrist. She completed general psychiatry training at Loma Linda University\, then continued at UCLA with a Child and Adolescent Fellowship.  Dr. Schaepper is committed to providing services for Syrian refugees both abroad and in the local area\, and has met with local leadership and refugee groups in the Middle East. \nThrough the Peace of Heart project\, Dr. Schaepper provides professional mental health support via online telecommunication platforms to refugees\, as well as “front line” workers (i.e.\, teachers\, doctors\, community helpers\, etc.)\, working directly with the refugees.  This very special population will receive vital emotional and psychological support\, through professional assistance in trauma coaching\, and the opportunity to heal and grow in a safe nurturing environment\, learning not only how to cope with the tragedies they have experienced\, but gaining tools for them to have a healthy mind. \nThis online event is free for SCPS Members. \nPlease Contact Us to RSVP

DESCRIPTION:SCPS and SCSCAP Present a joint meeting: \nCall 988\, Not 911: The State of Alternative Crisis Response in Southern California\nwith our speaker: John Franklin Sierra\, Ph.D \nSunday\, November 7th at 10:00 A.M. \nOn July 16\, 2020\, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) designated “988” as the new number to replace the National Suicide Hotline and take incoming mental health crisis calls\, with a phase-in deadline of July 16\, 2022. States have responded with their own initiatives to mobilize their decentralized networks. In California\, state assembly bill AB-988 spells out a specific action plan that will be debated over the coming year. Meanwhile\, stakeholders like the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health (DMH) were tasked to examine the current state of affairs and develop a comprehensive strategy for 1) streamlining and staffing crisis call centers\, 2) bolstering crisis mobile response units\, and 3) investing in crisis receiving and stabilization units. \nTo guide us through DMH’s roadmap with a focus on county and state initiatives\, Dr. John Franklin Sierra\, PhD\, will present an overview of where we are\, proposed next steps\, implications for our patients\, and how we can contribute to the improvement of these systems. Amidst racism’s heightened recognition as a global public health crisis\, individual practitioners\, academic medical centers\, journals\, and organized professional groups are contemplating strategies and solutions to dismantle it. Women only\, please! \n  \nJessica Jeffrey\, MD \nDr. Jeffrey is a child and adolescent psychiatrist at the UCLA Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior. Dr. Jeffrey obtained her undergraduate education at UCLA\, where she graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in psychobiology with minor in developmental child psychology. After completing her undergraduate studies\, Dr. Jeffrey had the privilege to work as an in-home behavior therapist at the Center for Autism and Related Disorders. This work inspired her to trek to Northern California to attend University of California at Berkeley and obtain her Master’s Degree in Public Health. While at Berkeley Dr. Jeffrey focused on maternal and child health issues and received a specialization in international health. She is grateful for the opportunity she had to work in rural villages in Tanzania\, where she focused on maternal mortality issues. \nDeciding to pursue a career in medicine\, Dr. Jeffrey attended the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA where she received her MD and MBA. While in medical school Dr. Jeffrey spent a summer working in Bhopal\, India with the survivors of the Union Carbide explosion. Additionally\, she spent time in Ghana\, where she consulted for HIV/AIDS non-profit organizations in West Africa and traveled to Mozambique in order to expand healthcare services and work with non-profit organizations to assist children orphaned by HIV/AIDS. Dr. Jeffrey also was a consultant to Head Start in Los Angeles\, CA where she worked with this organization to develop culturally sensitive\, low-literacy health educational materials. She completed General Psychiatry residency training at UCLA. \nDr. Jeffrey has published several review articles in the fields of psychiatry and academic medicine\, spanning topics including anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis\, quality of life in depression and use of dopaminergic agents for major depressive disorder. Dr. Jeffrey recently served as the member-in-training representative for the California Academy Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Executive Committee and on the Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Health Care Promotion and Prevention Committee. She is interested in systems of health care delivery\, quality improvement and family resilience research. Dr. Jeffrey also has a strong interest in advocacy for child and adolescent mental health. \n  \nBrooke Spanos\, MD \nDr. Spanos is a past President of SCSCAP’s Executive board and remains active to further promote advocacy and education for children’s mental health. She has had a private practice for adults\, children\, and adolescents since 2011\, which is currently located in Santa Monica. Dr. Spanos is also a staff psychiatrist at Penny Lane Centers\, a non-profit for youth\, with a focus on children in the foster system. She serves as Assistant Clinical Professor at UCLA medical school\, teaching 2nd year medical students. Previous employment has included Destinations for Teens (PHP and IOP for adolescents)\, UCLA TIES for Families (adoption and foster care)\, Children’s Institute (youth non-profit)\, and high risk Transitional Aged Youth programs (ages 16-25) at San Fernando Valley Community Mental Health Clinic. Dr. Spanos graduated medical school from Baylor College of Medicine\, and completed her adult psychiatry residency at UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute (NPI). She continued her child and adolescent psychiatry training at UCLA NPI\, where she served as Chief Fellow from 2010 – 2011. She feels strongly about emphasizing prevention and early intervention for children and families. Her focus includes parent support\, advocating for high quality schooling\, public education of child development issues\, and ensuring that we continue to decrease the stigma of mental health.

DESCRIPTION:Course Title: American Red Cross Disaster Cycle Services Overview and Disaster Mental Health\nIntroduction. \nDo you want to learn more about becoming a Disaster Mental Health Volunteer with the American\nRed Cross? This session will offer two of the four required pre-requisite courses to become a\nService Associate Disaster Mental Health Volunteer with the American Red Cross. The courses\nare taught back-to-back in this session. Participants will receive a certificate for both\ncourses that you can take back to your local chapter for credit when you sign up to volunteer. \nDisaster Cycle Services: An Overview – This 2 hour course is the first course in the Disaster\nCycle Services Curriculum and is intended to provide an overview to volunteers on the Red Cross\ndisaster mission and the cycle approach to disaster operations. Objectives include: \n\nIdentify types of needs for people impacted by a disaster.\nList ways a community can be affected by a disaster.\nDescribe how Disaster Cycle Services fulfills the American Red Cross mission.\nDescribe the Disaster Cycle Services model and the concept of whole cycle operations.\nIdentify actions the American Red Cross takes to help individuals\, families and communities prepare for emergencies.\nDescribe the services the American Red Cross provides to people and communities during the respond process.\nDescribe actions the American Red Cross takes to help clients and communities recover from disasters.\nIdentify ways the American Red Cross collaborates with community partners during disaster responses.\nDescribe the importance of volunteers to support the three core and five mission-enabling areas.\nDescribe opportunities for volunteers to engage with Disaster Cycle Services.\nIdentify the steps to volunteer with the American Red Cross.\n\nDisaster Mental Health Introduction – This one hour course provides an overview of the mission\nof Disaster Mental Health in the American Red Cross.
