SUMMARY:Mental Health Needs of Firefighters & Their Families
DESCRIPTION:The SCPS Disaster Mental Health Relief Committee presents\nThe Mental Health Needs of Firefighters and Their Families\nONLINE: Tuesday\, September 20\, 2022\n7:00 P.M. – 9:00 P.M. \nwith our speaker:\nSteven F. Froehlich\, Ph.D.\, MFT7666\nDirector of Behavioral Health & Lead Clinician\,\nLos Angeles County Fire Fighters Local 1014 \nDr. Steve Froehlich will lead a presentation and panel discussion with Peer Support personnel (firefighters who have been trained to provide Peer Support). \nThis session is designed for clinicians interested in becoming culturally competent with the special needs of firefighters and their families. The fire service is a unique culture based on a paramilitary structure. From mass casualty incidents to the pain of a child dying in their arms\, firefighters face horrors that few outside the profession can imagine\, which can take its toll on even the strongest individuals. National surveys suggest nearly one in three firefighters has considered suicide and face struggles with intimate relationships. A white paper commissioned by the Ruderman Foundation has revealed that\, “first responders (police and firefighters) are more likely to die by suicide than in the line of duty.” Consequently\, it is important that clinicians working with this population understand the unique culture and needs of firefighters and their families. \nSCPS Members\, please contact us to RSVP

SUMMARY:Advances in Psychiatry 3
DESCRIPTION:SCPS Presents\nAdvances In Psychiatry III\nNew Developments in Psychedelic Research and Treatment\nONLINE: Saturday\, January 29\, 2022\n9:00 A.M. – 12:15 P.M.\nREGISTRATION IS NOW CLOSED FOR THIS EVENT\n9:00am – 10:30am\nPsychedelics and Psychiatry: A New Treatment Model for the 21st Century\nCharles Grob\, M.D.\nProfessor of Psychiatry and Bio-Behavioral Sciences and Pediatrics\, David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA; Director\, Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry\, Harbor-UCLA Medical Center; Investigator\,\nLundquist Research Institute \nThis presentation will demonstrate how the psychedelic treatment model represents a paradigm shift in the conceptualization and treatment of psychiatric disorders. An overview of modern clinical research findings with MDMA and psilocybin will help to clarify emerging perspectives with broad potential implications for the future of psychiatry. The role of recent developments in public opinion conjoined with an evolving legal landscape in regard to hallucinogens will be addressed as they impact current research endeavors. The presentation will conclude with all important attention to optimizing safety and ethical parameters for clinical research with hallucinogenic drugs. The presentation will close with a Q and A with the audience. \n10:40am – 12:15pm\nPsilocybin Therapy in Palliative Care\nBrian Anderson\, MD\, MSc\nZuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital; UCSF Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences \nThe field of psilocybin research has expanded rapidly over the last 5 years with new clinical trials for a variety of indications being initiated on a regular basis. There is also a growing interest in regulatory alternatives that are making Psilocybin mushrooms and other psychedelics more readily available in the US. Given this growing interest in these substances\, there is an ever more urgent need for robust and reliable information on the safety and potential efficacy of psilocybin. Over the last several decades\, treating existential distress in patients with serious medical illness has consistently been a leading indication for psychedelic therapies. This talk will explore 20th and 21st Century data on the use of psilocybin for mood\, anxiety\, and existential distress in clinical populations\, with a focus on palliative care patients. We will focus on the limitations of current data\, health risks and contraindications\, and an evaluation of how the potential benefits of psilocybin therapy compare to currently available interventions. \nRegistration is Now Closed \nSCPS Members $40.00 | Non-SCPS Members $65.00\nSCPS Resident-Fellow Members $10.00 | Non-Member Residents $20.00 \n\nCME is not available for this event \nCancellations must be received 72 hours prior to the meeting and will be assessed a $15 administrative processing fee.

SUMMARY:Questions & Answers: Disaster Relief and Psychiatry
DESCRIPTION:The SCPS Disaster Committee presents\nQuestions & Answers: Disaster Relief and Psychiatry\nOnline: Thursday\, January 20\, 2022\n7:00 P.M. \nfeaturing:\nLeslie Gise\, MD\nRandy Mervis\, MD\nMary Ann Shaepper\, MD \nProviding disaster relief mental health is an extremely rewarding experience. This program will present three perspectives of this inspiring work. Our three presenters will each speak for 10 minutes describing the fascinating disaster relief mental health work that they have each done.  At the end of the three presentations\, they will answer audience questions. \nLeslie Gise\, M.D. will talk about what she learned from going to Katrina in 2005\, deploying to the Big Island of Hawaii in 2018\, serving as Mental Health Lead for the Maui Red Cross\, and serving as a member of the MRC Medical Reserve Corps (Maui County Health Volunteers). Dr. Gise is an active member on the APA’s Committee on Psychiatric Dimensions of Disaster and was formerly in DMAT Disaster Medical Assistance Team and VOAD Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster. \nRandy Mervis\, M.D. is a geriatric psychiatrist who retired from the Greater Los Angeles Veterans Affairs System after 30 years of service in 2018.  He had been a volunteer for the Los Angeles Chapter of the American Red Cross for over 25 years.  He has served this organization as a mental health worker for multiple traumatic events\, including fires\, floods\, train and plane crashes. \nMary Ann Schaepper\, M.D. is a board-certified child\, adolescent\, and adult psychiatrist. She completed general psychiatry training at Loma Linda University\, then continued at UCLA with a Child and Adolescent Fellowship.  Dr. Schaepper is committed to providing services for Syrian refugees both abroad and in the local area\, and has met with local leadership and refugee groups in the Middle East. \nThrough the Peace of Heart project\, Dr. Schaepper provides professional mental health support via online telecommunication platforms to refugees\, as well as “front line” workers (i.e.\, teachers\, doctors\, community helpers\, etc.)\, working directly with the refugees.  This very special population will receive vital emotional and psychological support\, through professional assistance in trauma coaching\, and the opportunity to heal and grow in a safe nurturing environment\, learning not only how to cope with the tragedies they have experienced\, but gaining tools for them to have a healthy mind. \nThis online event is free for SCPS Members. \nPlease Contact Us to RSVP

SUMMARY:Call 988\, Not 911: The State of Alternative Crisis Response
DESCRIPTION:SCPS and SCSCAP Present a joint meeting: \nCall 988\, Not 911: The State of Alternative Crisis Response in Southern California\nwith our speaker: John Franklin Sierra\, Ph.D \nSunday\, November 7th at 10:00 A.M. \nOn July 16\, 2020\, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) designated “988” as the new number to replace the National Suicide Hotline and take incoming mental health crisis calls\, with a phase-in deadline of July 16\, 2022. States have responded with their own initiatives to mobilize their decentralized networks. In California\, state assembly bill AB-988 spells out a specific action plan that will be debated over the coming year. Meanwhile\, stakeholders like the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health (DMH) were tasked to examine the current state of affairs and develop a comprehensive strategy for 1) streamlining and staffing crisis call centers\, 2) bolstering crisis mobile response units\, and 3) investing in crisis receiving and stabilization units. \nTo guide us through DMH’s roadmap with a focus on county and state initiatives\, Dr. John Franklin Sierra\, PhD\, will present an overview of where we are\, proposed next steps\, implications for our patients\, and how we can contribute to the improvement of these systems. Join us as we discuss implications and opportunities of California’s evolving Alternative Crisis Response system. \nSCPS Members and SCSCAP Members please RSVP HERE \n

SUMMARY:SCPS/SCSCAP Joint Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The Southern California Psychiatric Society and\nThe Southern California Society of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry present \nAbolition\, Antiracism\, and Psychiatry\nOnline: Sunday\, November 22nd 11:00am – 12:30pm \nwith our speaker:\nRupinder Legha\, MD \n1.5 Hours Category 1 CME will be provided. \nThe highly publicized murders of Ahmaud Arbery\, George Floyd\, and Breonna Taylor; the worldwide collective activism generated by the Black Lives Matter movement; and the disproportionate COVID-19 deaths of tens of thousands of Black Americans have forced a racial reckoning in our country and in our profession. Amidst racism’s heightened recognition as a global public health crisis\, individual practitioners\, academic medical centers\, journals\, and organized professional groups are contemplating strategies and solutions to dismantle it. This 90-minute presentation imagines what antiracism and abolition in the field of psychiatry might look like and posits core components to inform these efforts. \nThe Southern California Psychiatric Society (SCPS) is accredited by the Institute of\nMedical Quality/California Medical Association (IMQ/CMA) to provide continuing medical\neducation for physicians. SCPS takes responsibility for the content\, quality and\nscientific integrity of this CME activity.\nSCPS designates this educational activity for a maximum of 1.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit\n(s)TM. Dr. Jeffrey obtained her undergraduate education at UCLA\, where she graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in psychobiology with minor in developmental child psychology. After completing her undergraduate studies\, Dr. Jeffrey had the privilege to work as an in-home behavior therapist at the Center for Autism and Related Disorders. This work inspired her to trek to Northern California to attend University of California at Berkeley and obtain her Master’s Degree in Public Health. While at Berkeley Dr. Jeffrey focused on maternal and child health issues and received a specialization in international health. She is grateful for the opportunity she had to work in rural villages in Tanzania\, where she focused on maternal mortality issues. \nDeciding to pursue a career in medicine\, Dr. Jeffrey attended the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA where she received her MD and MBA. While in medical school Dr. Jeffrey spent a summer working in Bhopal\, India with the survivors of the Union Carbide explosion. Additionally\, she spent time in Ghana\, where she consulted for HIV/AIDS non-profit organizations in West Africa and traveled to Mozambique in order to expand healthcare services and work with non-profit organizations to assist children orphaned by HIV/AIDS. Dr. Jeffrey also was a consultant to Head Start in Los Angeles\, CA where she worked with this organization to develop culturally sensitive\, low-literacy health educational materials. She completed General Psychiatry residency training at UCLA. \nDr. Jeffrey has published several review articles in the fields of psychiatry and academic medicine\, spanning topics including anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis\, quality of life in depression and use of dopaminergic agents for major depressive disorder. Dr. Jeffrey recently served as the member-in-training representative for the California Academy Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Executive Committee and on the Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Health Care Promotion and Prevention Committee. She is interested in systems of health care delivery\, quality improvement and family resilience research. Dr. Jeffrey also has a strong interest in advocacy for child and adolescent mental health. \n  \nBrooke Spanos\, MD \nDr. Spanos is a past President of SCSCAP’s Executive board and remains active to further promote advocacy and education for children’s mental health. She has had a private practice for adults\, children\, and adolescents since 2011\, which is currently located in Santa Monica. Dr. Spanos is also a staff psychiatrist at Penny Lane Centers\, a non-profit for youth\, with a focus on children in the foster system. She serves as Assistant Clinical Professor at UCLA medical school\, teaching 2nd year medical students. Previous employment has included Destinations for Teens (PHP and IOP for adolescents)\, UCLA TIES for Families (adoption and foster care)\, Children’s Institute (youth non-profit)\, and high risk Transitional Aged Youth programs (ages 16-25) at San Fernando Valley Community Mental Health Clinic. Dr. Spanos graduated medical school from Baylor College of Medicine\, and completed her adult psychiatry residency at UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute (NPI). She continued her child and adolescent psychiatry training at UCLA NPI\, where she served as Chief Fellow from 2010 – 2011. She feels strongly about emphasizing prevention and early intervention for children and families. Her focus includes parent support\, advocating for high quality schooling\, public education of child development issues\, and ensuring that we continue to decrease the stigma of mental health.

DESCRIPTION:CLICK HERE TO REGISTER ONLINE \nSchedule\n8:15 a.m. – Registration\, Continental Breakfast\, Booth Exhibits\n8:55 a.m. – Opening Remarks \n9:00 a.m. – Underappreciated and Stigmatized: Benzodiazepines in Clinical Practice\nRichard Balon\, M.D.\, Professor (Clinical) – Psychiatry and Anesthesiology\, Associate Chair – Education\, Wayne State University School of Medicine\nAfter a brief review of the discovery of benzodiazepines\, this presentation will begin with an overview of the use of benzodiazepines in clinical practice. The utility of benzodiazepines in various disorders will be discussed\, including but not limited to anxiety and mood disorders. Following this\, the usefulness of benzodiazepines in consultation liaison psychiatry\, such as management of cardiovascular and gastrointestinal disorders\, will be examined. This presentation will continue with a brief exploration of controversies related to benzodiazepines\, such as misuse\, abuse and dependence\, as well pertinent side effects\, and will conclude with an examination of gender/racial/ethnic differences in prescribing. \n10:15 a.m. – Break \n10:30 a.m. – Lithium and Mood Stabilizing Anti-Convulsants in Bipolar Disorders and Related Conditions\nMark Frye\, M.D.\, Professor of Psychiatry\, Chair Department of Psychiatry\, Mayo Clinic\nThis presentation will cover the latest developments in psychopharmacologic management of the spectrum of Bipolar Disorders. The talk expands to include broader insights into the effective comprehensive diagnosis and treatment of the Bipolar continuum disorders. \n11:45 a.m. – Lunch Break (on our own) \n1:00 p.m. – Psilocybin Therapy: Safety Concerns and Clinical Approach\nBrian T. Anderson\, M.D.\, MSc\, Staff Psychiatrist – UCSF\, Department of Psychiatry\nModern\, early-phase clinical trials have found moderate-to-large within-group and between-group effect sizes of psilocybin therapy for the treatment of a range of psychiatric conditions. Psilocybin therapy carries with it several notable health risks that remain poorly characterized and have so far mostly been avoided with diligent screening and very selective exclusion criteria. This talk reviews the basic components of psilocybin therapy\, the evidence for its efficacy in psychiatric disorders\, and the clinical safety measures that are generally employed in psilocybin trials. Data from a clinical trial of psilocybin therapy recently-completed at UCSF will be presented as an example of this intervention. The talk concludes with suggestions for reducing risk with psilocybin therapy as this intervention is investigated in larger and more diverse populations. \n2:15 p.m. – Mindfulness Interventions to Promote Sleep Health and Reverse Inflammation\nMichael R. Irwin\, M.D.\, Cousins Distinguished Professor of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences\, David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA; Distinguished Professor of Psychology\, UCLA College of Letters and Sciences; Director\, Cousins Center for Psychoneuroimmunology\, Director\, Mindful Awareness Research Center\, Jane and Terry Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior\nInsomnia leads to increases in inflammation\, and is a robust risk factor for depression and other inflammatory disorders. Mindfulness based interventions are effective in the treatment of sleep disturbance\, and have additional benefits of reversing inflammation and reducing depressive symptoms. Mindfulness meditation may be introduced as a solution to remediate moderate sleep disturbances. Further\, given that standardized mindfulness programs are readily delivered at low cost\, dissemination of these treatments at the community level can be readily advanced to promote sleep health. \n\n\nRegister via Paypal\n\n\n \n\n\nAdvances in Psychiatry\n\n\nSCPS Member $225.00 USDNon-SCPS Member $250.00 USDSCPS Resident* $55.00 USDNon-SCPS Resident* $65.00 USD \n\n\n\n\n\n\nSCPS Member – $225.00\nNon-SCPS Member – $250.00\nSCPS Resident* – $55.00\nNon-SCPS Resident* – $65.00 \n*Must be enrolled in a full-time\, degree granting program.  Must send photocopy of student ID with registration form. \nYou may also pay with a check.  Please print this page or this BROCHURE and make check payable to SCPS. SUMMARY:Suicide: Perspectives On A Contemporary Crisis
DESCRIPTION:CLICK HERE TO REGISTER ONLINE\n \nSchedule\n8:30 a.m. – Registration\, Continental Breakfast\n8:55 a.m. – Opening Remarks \n9:00 a.m. – Suicide Prevention: Science and Trends\nChristine Moutier\, M.D. \nChief Medical Officer\, American Foundation for Suicide Prevention\nSuicide was declared a public health crisis by the U.S. Surgeon General in 1999. However\, suicide rates have continued to climb over the past 18 years by a staggering 33% overall. Suicide rates in youth and young adults are lower than that of older demographic groups\, however the rates have been increasing in American youth as well. There are several science-informed\, evidence-based strategies to reduce suicide risk\, both in the public health approach for an entire population\, as well as clinical interventions for patient care. As the science of suicide and prevention has been growing rapidly over the past two decades\, these prevention strategies and targeted ways to better identify risk must be translated and disseminated for greatest impact. Mental health conditions are among the most common and potent risk factors for suicide\, and most mental health problems can be effectively managed. But real and perceived barriers\, such as confidentiality concerns and fear of negative ramifications on one’s status as a student or professional keep many individuals from addressing their mental health needs. \n10:00 a.m. – Asians and Suicide\nRona Hu\, M.D.\nMedical Director\, Acute Psychiatric Inpatient Unit\, Stanford University School of Medicine\nNationwide\, Asian American youth are at a higher risk of suicide than their non-Asian peers. This tragic statistic was brought close to home at Stanford when a nationally publicized ‘cluster’ in Palo Alto included four deaths in 2015: all four were Asian. Stanford psychiatrists have worked with the community to identify risk factors and help decrease stressors in this population. Dr. Hu and colleagues have pioneered an innovative theater company called CHIPAO: Communication Health Interactives for Parents of Adolescents and Others. The program received national acclaim and is expanding into other areas of need\, such as Latino and other immigrant parents\, and geographic areas. \n11:00 a.m. – Break \n11:15 a.m. – Psychiatrist Reactions to Patient Suicide\nMichael Gitlin\, M.D.\nDistinguished Professor of Clinical Psychiatry; Director\, Adult Division of Psychiatry; Director\, Mood Disorders Clinic; Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA\nPatient suicide is among the most difficult outcomes among clinical psychiatrists. This talk will review the typical reactions to patient suicide\, and discuss the phases of responses. We will also review the predictors of more difficult responses to patient suicide. Finally\, we will discuss the optimal methods for coping with patient suicide. \n12:15 p.m. (to 12:45) – Physician Suicide\nMatthew Goldenberg\, D.O.\nGeneral and Addiction Psychiatry Private Practice\, Santa Monica\, CA; Chairman Of The Board\, California Public Protection & Physician Health (CPPPH); California Clinical Instructor\, Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences at the UCLA Geffen School of Medicine; Assistant Professor of Psychiatry & Medical Staff\, Cedars Sinai Medical Center\nWhile the media and our field is focused on the Suicide Epidemic\, there is a lesser discussed epidemic occurring involving physician suicide. It is estimated from various sources that hundreds of physicians die by suicide annually. We know that fear and stigma are two of the largest barriers that keep physicians from getting help when they suffer from mental health conditions and addiction. Untreated mental health conditions are one of the largest causes of suicide among physicians. This talk will cover what every psychiatrist needs to know to assist a colleague\, their wellbeing committee or even themselves. \n\nSCPS Member – $160.00\nNon-SCPS Member – $180.00\nSCPS Resident* – $55.00\nNon-SCPS Resident* – $65.00 \n\nRegister via Paypal\n\n \n\n\n\nSCPS Suicide: Perspectives on a Contemporary Crisis\n\n\nSCPS Member $160.00 USDNon-SCPS Member $180.00 USDSCPS Resident* $55.00 USDNon-SCPS Resident* $65.00 USD\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\nEarly-Bird Registration is now closed. \n*Must be enrolled in a full-time\, degree granting program. SUMMARY:Psychopharmacology Update 30
DESCRIPTION:CLICK HERE TO REGISTER ONLINE \nSchedule\n8:15 a.m. – Registration\, Continental Breakfast\, Booth Exhibits\n8:55 a.m. – Opening Remarks \n9:00 a.m. – Treatment of Obesity with Emphasis on Topics of Interest to Psychiatrists\nFrank Greenway\, M.D.\, Medical Director and Professor\, Pennington Biomedical Research Center Baton Rouge\, Louisiana \nThis talk will discuss the role played by the reward system compared to the hypothalamic hunger system by drugs approved for the treatment of obesity. We will discuss the cannabinoid system and potential approaches to treating obesity and avoiding the depression problems seen with cannabinoid-1 inverse agonists like rimonabant. Causing weight loss at the body locations people feel are problem areas as a way of improving self-image when losing weight will also be discussed. \n10:15 a.m. – Break \n10:30 a.m. – Neuromodulation: The Future of Treatment for Neuropsychiatric Illness\nAndrew Leuchter\, M.D.\, Professor of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences; Director\, TMS Clinical and Research Service; Director\, Neuromodulation Division.\nNeuromodulation treatments are an emerging class of technologies that apply magnetic or electrical energy to the brain to treat depression\, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder\, chronic pain\, and other neuropsychiatric illnesses. Neuromodulation treatments can be used as either an alternative or an addition to medications for the treatment of illness. These cutting edge technologies modify the activity of neural networks\, and include non-invasive methods that utilize electromagnets or small electrodes applied to the scalp\, and invasive techniques that involve insertion of electrodes into the brain. Non-invasive treatments include repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS)\, Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT)\, transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS)\, Trigeminal Nerve Stimulation (TNS)\, and synchronized Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (sTMS). Invasive techniques include Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) and Vagal Nerve Stimulation (VNS). These techniques offer new hope for the the treatment of patients who have received inadequate benefit from medications. This talk will review the effectiveness of neuromodulation treatments that currently are available\, as well as major experimental treatments in development. \n11:45 a.m. – Lunch Break (on our own) \n1:00 p.m. – An Update on Anxiety Disorders\nMark H. Pollack\, M.D.\, The Grainger Professor and Chairman\, Department of Psychiatry\, Rush University Medical Center.\nThis talk will review pharmacologic strategies to improve the outcomes for treatment of individuals with anxiety disorders. \n2:15 p.m. – The Top Ten Drug Interactions that Limit Efficacy in Psychiatric Treatment\nPaul Zarkowski\, M.D.\, Clinical Assistant Professor\, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences\, Harborview Medical Center\, University of Washington; Psychiatrist\, Sound\, Seattle\, Washington.\nAlthough there are numerous resources to guide prescribers away from harmful drug interactions and pharmacokinetic interactions\, there is less written on interactions that limit efficacy. These are common and can be grouped in three categories including functional drug interactions with opposing functions and side effect profiles\, drug interactions with antagonistic mechanisms of action and controversial drug interactions with opposing pharmacology. Each of these categories is represented in the top ten drug interactions that limit efficacy. The relative prevalence of each efficacy limiting interaction will be presented and discussed. \n\nSCPS Member – $200.00\nNon-SCPS Member – $225.00\nSCPS Resident* – $30.00\nNon-SCPS Resident* – $40.00 \n\nRegister via Paypal\n\n\n \n\n\nPsychopharmacology Update 30\n\n\nSCPS Member $225.00 USDNon-SCPS Member $250.00 USDSCPS Resident* $55.00 USDNon-SCPS Resident* $65.00 USD \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbove fees effective until 1/15.
