SUMMARY:Private Practice 101
DESCRIPTION:SCPS Presents: \nPrivate Practice 101\nONLINE: Wednesday\, March 18\, 2026\n7:30pm – 9:00pm \nwith our speakers:\nElizabeth Casalegno\, MD\nand\nVictoria Huang\, MD \nLaunching Your Private Practice Journey \nTransitioning from residency to private practice can feel like navigating an entirely different world. Or\, maybe you have an itch to start a part-time private practice well into your career. On March 18th\, 2026 at 7:30pm via Zoom\, Drs. Elizabeth Casalegno and Victoria Huang will present a “Private Practice 101” session tailored for the SCPS community. We’ll be sharing the highest-yield insights focusing on the basics: location\, lease negotiations\, EHR selection\, and how to build a practice that avoids burnout. Come join us for a 60-minute deep dive followed by a candid Q&A as they share their experience on how to build a successful private practice. \nSpeaker Bios: \nVictoria Huang\, M.D. and Elizabeth Casalegno\, M.D. are psychiatrists that founded and actively manage the Adelpha Psychiatric Group. After completing their adult psychiatry training at UCLA NPI in 2013\, they moved into the world of private practice. They opened Adelpha in 2016 in Encino with the goal of bringing elite psychiatric care to more than just the elite few by learning how to navigate the complexities of taking commercial insurance. In 2019\, they expanded to Pasadena and most recently opened their third location in Oakland in 2025. \nFor over 10 years\, Drs. Casalegno and Huang have delivered an extensive private practice lecture series for the UCLA residency program and brought this to the USC residency program in 2024. They are excited to continuing helping the next generation of physicians navigate the clinical and business complexities of private practice. \nSCPS Members – Please Contact Us for the link to attend.

SUMMARY:Disaster Relief Management
DESCRIPTION:SCPS Presents: \nDisaster Relief Management: \nCommunity Resiliency Model (DRM–CRM®) Preparation Program\nA Trauma-Informed\, Community-Centered Framework for Disaster Mental Health Response\nONLINE: Thursday\, February 19th | 7pm – 8:30pm \nFeaturing our Speakers:\nElaine Miller-Karas\, LCSW\nMichael Sapp\, PhD \nPurpose \nThe Community Resiliency Model (CRM) equips communities with biologically based\, trauma-informed skills that support nervous system regulation and emotional stabilization before\, during\, and after disasters. As a public-health model\, it strengthens community capacity when professional mental health resources become overwhelmed. \nWhat CRM Provides: Practical Skills Across the Lifespan \nA Biological\, Skills-Based Approach \nCRM teaches survivors to: \n\nRecognize common biological responses to disaster\nIncrease interoceptive awareness (“body literacy”)\nNotice sensations of well-being\nUse simple wellness skills to reduce autonomic reactivity\n\nThis helps shift the internal narrative from “I’m weak and not coping” to “I’m having a normal biological reaction to an abnormal event.” \nTrauma-Sensitive Conversation Tools for Clinicians \nCRM integrates into psychiatric and psychotherapeutic encounters through strength-based\, regulating questions such as: \n\n“What is helping you get through right now?”\n“Can you remember the moment you realized you would survive?”\n“Can you remember when help first arrived?”\n\nThese questions reduce physiological distress and help survivors reconnect with internal resources—summarized by one participant who said\, “Thank you for reminding me of what I already knew but had forgotten.” \nHow Psychiatrists Can Apply CRM – Psychiatrists can: \n\nIntegrate CRM language and skills during evaluations and follow-up\nNormalize biological responses to trauma and stress\nCoordinate care with CRM-trained community partners\nSupport prevention-focused disaster mental health strategies\nEncourage family use of CRM through the iChill app (English\, Spanish\, Hebrew\, Arabic; Korean and Simplified Chinese coming soon) or through Community Resiliency Model workshops being offered in the community and through LA County Department of Mental Health.\n\nSpeaker Bios:\nElaine Miller-Karas\, LCSW\nElaine Miller-Karas\, LCSW is a trauma therapist\, author\, international lecturer\, and social entrepreneur. She is the Founder and Executive Director Emerita of the Trauma Resource Institute (TRI) and the key developer of the Community Resiliency Model® (CRM) and Trauma Resiliency Model® (TRM)\, biologically based approaches to trauma healing used worldwide. She is a contributor to Psychology Today\, the host of Resiliency Within on VoiceAmerica\, and a consultant in trauma- and resilience-informed care to international organizations. She is also a founding member of the International Transformational Resiliency Coalition\, advancing trauma-informed responses to climate change and global adversity. The second edition of her book\, Building Resiliency to Trauma\, the Community and Trauma Resiliency Models (2023) was published by Routledge. Committed to global equity\, Elaine has launched community-based healing projects to support populations during and after natural and human-made disasters. She fosters culturally responsive trauma-recovery and capacity-building initiatives\, empowering local leaders to develop sustainable\, grassroots solutions. \nMichael Sapp\, Ph.D.\nMichael Sapp\, Ph.D. is a clinical psychologist and serves as Executive Director of the Trauma Resource Institute (TRI)\, where he has been actively involved since 2010. As a member of TRI’s Senior Faculty\, he has taught the Trauma Resiliency Model (TRM)® and Community Resiliency Model (CRM)® to clinicians\, educators\, first responders\, and community leaders across the United States and around the world. A notable aspect of Dr. Sapp’s work lies in his keen interest in neuroscientific approaches to trauma healing\, having co-authored “The Nervous System\, Memory\, and Trauma” in Building Resilience to Trauma: The Trauma and Community Resiliency Models and the peer-reviewed article “The Body Can Balance the Score.” His work spans domestic and international settings\, including humanitarian initiatives for communities in Angola\, Ukraine\, Nepal\, the Philippines\, Turkey\, and Northern Ireland\, advancing culturally responsive\, community-based pathways to resilience and healing. \n SCPS Members: Please register from the link in your email.

SUMMARY:Private Practice Townhall
DESCRIPTION:SCPS Private Practice Townhall\nTuesday\, March 21st at 7pm via Zoom\nSCPS is excited to present a private practice townhall\, focused on local and state advocacy. This is an opportunity for those in private practice\, outpatient psychiatry\, and any psychiatrist interested in learning how private practice psychiatry is being strengthen to attend and participate. \nSCPS recognizes that there are fundamental problems and special burdens on psychiatrists who have a private practice. Participants will better understand unjustified impediments from panelists and speakers (i.e.\, regulations\, laws\, and other social and local impediments.) \nWith a coordinated effort\, SCPS will work to forge effective local advocacy for private practice. Together with other psychiatrists in private practice\, your participation will strengthen the spark needed to make effective change and will increase your understanding of the specific next best steps (i.e.\, bill support\, action papers\, media engagement\, collaboration with other organizations). Participants will actively help to direct the focus of SCPS’s energy on the most needed changes. \n(Draft) Townhall Agenda: \nTopic 1: A general primer on statewide advocacy and how it impacts private practice.  How are state and federal advocacy done at the State Level?\nPresenter: Emily Wood\, MD\, CA State Association of Psychiatrists (CSAP) Government Affairs Committee (GAC) Chair \nTopic 2: SCPS Private Practice Related Advocacy Priorities and Related Committee Activity.\nPresenters: Matthew Goldenberg\, DO\, SCPS PPC Chair\, Gillian Friedman\, MD\, and Robert Burchuk\, MD\, Access To  Care Committee Chairs \nTopic 3: Discussion about 2023 legislative session\, potential bills\, and current bills related to private practice.\nPresenters: Paul Yoder\, CSAP Lobbyist and Emily Wood\, MD\, CSAP GAC Chair \nTopic 4: What can we do. SUMMARY:Advances in Psychiatry IV
DESCRIPTION:SCPS Presents\nAdvances In Psychiatry IV\nONLINE: Saturday\, January 28\, 2023 (Registration is now closed for this event)\n9:00 A.M. – 12:15 P.M. \n3 Hours CME will be provided. \n9:00am – 10:30am\nAddiction in LGBTQ+ Communities and Crystal Methamphetamine Use Among Gay Men \nPetros Levounis\, M.D.\nProfessor and Chair\, Department of Psychiatry\, and Associate Dean for Professional Development\, Rutgers New Jersey Medical School; Chief of Service\, University Hospital\, Newark\, New Jersey; President-Elect\, American Psychiatric Association \nReflecting sweeping changes in our understanding of gender and sexuality over the past decade\, this presentation aims to provide an informative and affirming discussion of addiction treatment for clinicians working with patients of diverse gender and sexual identities. We will focus on the re-emergence of crystal methamphetamine among gay men and discuss culturally sensitive\, safe\, and effective treatments. \nLearning Objectives:\no List the three dimensions of sexual orientation and the three dimensions of gender.\no Analyze the connection between crystal methamphetamine use among gay men and the risk of HIV transmission.\no Describe the Matrix Model of treatment for crystal methamphetamine use disorder.\n(There is no conflict of interest)\n10:45am – 12:15pm\nLoneliness vs. Wisdom in the Era of Modern Pandemics\nDilip Jeste\, M.D.\nDirector\, Sam and Rose Stein Institute for Research on Aging\, University of California San Diego;\nDistinguished Professor of Psychiatry and Neurosciences\, University of California San Diego; Senior Associate Dean for Healthy Aging and Senior Care\, University of California San Diego \nThe COVID-19 pandemic was preceded by a silent behavioral pandemic of loneliness and social isolation that has led to millions of deaths from physical illnesses as well as deaths of despair from suicides and opioid use. Fortunately\, there is emerging evidence for a potential behavioral vaccine against loneliness in the form of wisdom. Wisdom is a complex personality trait with specific components including empathy/compassion\, emotional regulation\, and self-reflection. This presentation will address putative neurobiological underpinnings of wisdom. Components of wisdom are potentially modifiable and tend to increase with age and experience. There is a need for individual and community level changes in our education and healthcare systems to help transform today’s lonely\, distressed\, depressed\, and polarized society into a wiser\, happier\, and healthier world. \nLearning Objectives:\no Assess loneliness and other social determinants of mental health.\no Evaluate wisdom and its components\, including compassion\, emotional regulation\, and self-reflection.\no Use strategies to reduce loneliness by increasing wisdom and resilience.\n(There is no conflict of interest)\n3 Hours Category 1 CME will be provided. \nThis activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education through the joint providership of the American Psychiatric Association (APA) and the Southern California Psychiatric Society. The APA is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians. The APA designates this activity for a maximum of 3 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. \nCancellations must be received 72 hours prior to the meeting and will be assessed a $15 administrative processing fee. \nRegistration is closed for this event.\n

SUMMARY:Mental Health Needs of Firefighters & Their Families
DESCRIPTION:The SCPS Disaster Mental Health Relief Committee presents\nThe Mental Health Needs of Firefighters and Their Families\nONLINE: Tuesday\, September 20\, 2022\n7:00 P.M. – 9:00 P.M. \nwith our speaker:\nSteven F. Froehlich\, Ph.D.\, MFT7666\nDirector of Behavioral Health & Lead Clinician\,\nLos Angeles County Fire Fighters Local 1014 \nDr. Steve Froehlich will lead a presentation and panel discussion with Peer Support personnel (firefighters who have been trained to provide Peer Support). \nThis session is designed for clinicians interested in becoming culturally competent with the special needs of firefighters and their families. The fire service is a unique culture based on a paramilitary structure. From mass casualty incidents to the pain of a child dying in their arms\, firefighters face horrors that few outside the profession can imagine\, which can take its toll on even the strongest individuals. National surveys suggest nearly one in three firefighters has considered suicide and face struggles with intimate relationships. A white paper commissioned by the Ruderman Foundation has revealed that\, “first responders (police and firefighters) are more likely to die by suicide than in the line of duty.” Consequently\, it is important that clinicians working with this population understand the unique culture and needs of firefighters and their families. \nSCPS Members\, please contact us to RSVP
