The MBC Board directed its staff to change the introduction statement and questions on mental and physical health on its licensing application. This came after a July 30th, 2024 task force hearing in which interested parties were able to share their perspectives. CSAP’s state advocates at SYASL attended both hearings along with the California Medical Association and other specialty medical associations. Testimony and written comments have focused on changes to the existing application that can offer more inclusivity for providers who may be dealing with mental or physical challenges.

The language changes approved this week were closely aligned with the suggestions offered by CSAP and other coalition members. During the hearing, consumer advocates testified on their dissatisfaction with the recommendations – and ultimately the outcome – to approve the changes. Board members responded to this criticism by acknowledging the importance of patient protection but emphasizing that their decision came after careful consideration and hard work, citing collaboration with the Federation of State Medical Boards and other states that have made similar changes.
