The Legislature adjourned at midnight last Saturday, August 31. The final hours were tense and intense. There was division between the Senate and the Assembly that ultimately led to some bills dying unceremoniously as ultimately the Assembly ran out of time to process everything on their file due to decorum and procedural issues. Almost as soon as it was over, Governor Newsom called a special legislative session to address gasoline prices and price spikes, which could mean that the Legislature returns to Sacramento sometime this fall although – so far – the Senate is balking.
The good news is, as we reported last week, CSAP-sponsored SB 1184 (Eggman) and co-sponsored SB 1238 (Eggman) had already both houses of the legislature. CSAP’s legislative advocates at SYASL know better than to leave bills hanging fire until the very end. These bills are still awaiting the Governor’s action.
SB 1184 and SB 1238 certainly top the CSAP scorecard for 2024. In addition, no bill opposed by CSAP got to the Governor this year. And, dozens of additional bills supported by CSAP are also on Governor Newsom’s desk. Later in January, we will provide you with the complete rundown. Until then, and as was mentioned last week, it is time to start thinking about ideas for legislation in 2025. Got one? Email Paul Yoder so that the Government Affairs Committee can consider it as early as September 19.
